Ijen plateau or known as « Kawah Ijen » is highly recommended to mountain buffs and hikers. The Plateau was at one time a huge active crater, 134 sq km in area. Today, Ijen is a quiet but active volcano, and the landscape is dominated by the volcanic cones of Ijen (2,368 asl) and Merapi (2,800 asl) on the northeastern edge of the Plateau, and Raung (3,332 asl) on the southwest corner.
Depart early morning from hotel using the 4WD vehicle, to conquer the steep road in 1.5 hours till the starting point located at 1600 meters from the sea level. From the starting point we have to walk 3 kilometers to reach the crater of Ijen located at the altitude 2.250 meter from the sea level. During the trek we will get a chance to see the work of sulfur porter. They usually climb twice a day and the can lifting weights until 100kg at once.
